In the New England of the 1600's, a woman named Hester Prynne gives birth to a daughter out of wedlock. She is publicly shamed and punished by the community by being made to wear a scarlet letter "A" on her clothing. Nevertheless, despite questioning, she firmly refuses to reveal the identity of the father of her daughter Pearl. When her presumed-dead-at-sea husband suddenly turns up in town, a chain of events begins that has Hester, her concealed lover, her long-lost husband and her daughter caught in a psychological, spiritual and romantic tangle. The characters are not only at odds with one another, but with themselves, as intellect and emotion, "head vs. heart” struggle for the upper hand. Compassion, faith, cruelty and love connect them all, and ebb and flow between them like a great river of life.
